The next morning Lana and Somalia were awakened by a prefect running down the stairs yelling at everyone to wake up. "Since when did they do that?" Somalia yawned. "I hope it's only on the first day," one of her roommates replied. At any rate, they were all awake now. Lana and Somalia dressed in Ravelclaw colors and headed down to the common room, hoping to see another friend to drag to breakfast with them.

Hilda woke up to the sound of a voice coming from her fireplace. She hadn't gotten much sleep, having been too cold despite all the blankets she had used. It was rather odd, but Hilda was now concerned about her fireplace. Gods, no. She glanced at the clock. She was supposed to wake up in five minutes. But she knew who had deemed it time for her to wake up. She wondered briefly if she had a bucket of water to throw on his crackling face, but instead just stood and walked over, her hanging head and slow gait eerily similar to your classic zombie.
"Morning, beautiful," said the face in the fire.
His bright and happy smile made her just that more tired, and she mumbled under her breath, "That Cael kid better get here soon to show me where the bloody coffee is."
"What was that?" Calix asked, suddenly concerned.
Hilda let herself fall to the ground so she could stare at Calix's face better. "Some prefect Cael knows where to find coffee," she explained in a rough and tired voice.
"Cael? As in James' boyfriend Cael? That guy's pretty cool," Calix commented.
Hilda noted the words 'James' boyfriend'. So, the prefect she had spoken to was gay? Huh, interesting fact to be filed away until she met this boyfriend. What kind of guy would the human connection to her coffee (as she had come to think of Cael within the last twelve hours while she tried to sleep) date? She shook her head. She'd think about it. "Focus. Coffee. Morning. Need."
"The Holy Grail of beverages," Calix added with a knowing nod.
Hilda felt the urge to smile at that reference, but instead put all her energy into groaning. "I swear if they're guarding the coffee beans with a not-so-ordinary rabbit I will not be afraid to sacrifice students," Hilda hissed, putting her head in her hands.
Calix chuckled. "I wouldn't put it pass them. Come on, get dressed. I wanna actually see you before dinner, if that's not too much to ask," he informed her.
"You're not-question already exceeded the word limit," Hilda shot back, rubbing her eyes and standing. Calix shot her one last smile before vanishing, and Hilda got to work finding a pair of sweatpants and an oversized Panic at the Disco shirt she'd found at a rummage sale. Then she slid on her teaching robes and put her brown and blonde streaked hair up into a sloppy ponytail-bun combination at the back of her head, low on her neck. Bangs still fell in her eyes, but she didn't care at the moment.
She entered the main part of the common room in time to see that some of the girl Ravenclaws were already downstairs. She didn't bother to ask names, they'd only be important if she needed to yell at them. In fact, she didn't even address them. Just stared at the stairs that lead to the boys dormitory.
--------- (I'll start putting these separations in for your reading ease, as you have been so kind to do that for me) ----------
Yasu awoke to find Chayne staring out the window. Whatever letter she had written had been sent, as Chayne's owl was no longer in the room sitting on the sill. The bubbly girl stood up to check on her rat. Hichigo squeaked as Yasu stuck food into his cage, and then decided to cling to the gate until she opened it and stuck the little rat into her pocket. "Alright, fine," she said with a smile. The other girls woke up and got dressed in their classic slow fashion, because the first day was the day of impressions. Makeup had to be done and checked, girls had to debate how short to roll up their skirts before it was too short, whether or not to button the top button of their shirt, should they put their hair in a ponytail?
The novel-writing girl, Tessa, wasn't fussing at all about her appearance except her bangs and the tie she could never do right. Chayne wasn't bothering at all. Her tie hung undone from her neck, she lacked shoes, and overall looked like a mess. Yasu had to insist on doing her tie.
The only thing Yasu had done was made sure her hair wasn't messed up from sleeping. Then she made her way down the stairs to see if she could meet up with James, Chayne trailing her.

Lana and Somalia decided that they would wait specifically for Cael, he was a good friend to hang around and they liked his company. They also liked hanging out with James and he was easier to find when following Cael. Neither of the girls had seen James since last school year and they had some catching up to do, hopefully at breakfast. Their new Head of House walked out of her room looking grumpy, like she would have liked to sleep through the entire day. "She sure is transfixed on the boys' staircase." Somalia remarked. "Maybe she's waiting to see that the prefects and Head Boy are all in line. Who knows, maybe she does inspection every morning." Lana didn't want to judge a person she hardly knew, not yet. "Or maybe she's waiting for someone to yell at." Somalia didn't quite share her friend's tactfulness. The girls held their conversation in whispers, hoping that Hilda didn't hear them.

Cael woke up with a yawn, hand automatically reaching out for his wand. He froze for a moment, confused. Slowly, details began to filter in--where he was, what day it was, why he needed to wake up--and he sat up, rubbing his eyes. Ysbryd sat in his lap, purring. He yawned again, scratching between his cat's ears, muttering to him in Welsh. After a minute or so of that, he quickly got dressed, running a hand through his hair and gathering up his things for class. He left out a bit of food and fresh water for Ysbryd, giving him a final pet. Slinging his school bag over his shoulder, he headed out of the dorm, not stopping to speak to his dormmates. He wasn't much of a morning person, and they were all used to it by now. He clattered down the stairs, taking them two at a time. When he reached the bottom, he stopped, seeing Professor Roads standing there staring at him. He quickly recalled promising to show her where the coffee was this morning. Had she been waiting for him? Not too long, he hoped. He'd thought he would just see her in the Great Hall...
"Morning, Professor Roads." he said, albeit a bit roughly, his voice still hoarse from sleep. He caught sight of Somalia and Lana a little to the side, and he greeted them as well. He was a bit perplexed at the fact that everyone seemed to have been waiting for him. -- James woke up with a start, hearing a yell coming from the bathroom. The boy in the bed next to him rolled off of the mattress and hit the floor with a yelp. James sighed. Dorm, sweet dorm. Giving up on the chance of getting any more sleep, James rolled out of bed. After a quick shower and brushing both his hair and teeth, he pulled on his school robes, hastily knotting his tie rather awkwardly around his neck--he could never remember how to do it correctly. He gave some food to Hermes, his tawny owl, while joining in on the conversation among his dormmates. The yell that had woken him up had apparently come from someone who'd found another boy's toad in his shower stall. James laughed at this, teasing the one who'd yelled.
After much good-natured ribbing and scuffling, James made it downstairs to Gryffindor Common Room with his school things shoved into his bag. He was looking forward to getting his schedule, hoping that he had plenty of classes with the Ravenclaws (for obvious reasons). "Hey, Yasu!" he said with a grin, catching sight of her.

Somalia was quizzical, "That's really strange. Why was Professor Roads waiting for Cael?" "I hope he's not in trouble." Lana said, "C'mon, let's go to breakfast, maybe we can talk then." "If Cael isn't captured by our Head of House by then." The girls picked their bags off the floor and went out the door. They were both excited to get schedules, Lana was more excited though, she had a heavy course load and couldn't wait to begin.

Hilda's human connection to coffee walked down the stairs and greeted her as well as two other girls in a very tired voice. Hilda glanced over to see which two it had been. Ah, the girls who had been talking to themselves in hushed tones. Likely it was so that Hilda couldn't hear, but she wasn't the least bit interested. She had one goal this morning.
"Coffee, Cael," Hilda said in a tired voice. At least he didn't pretend to be full of energy in the morning, nor did he try and tell her 'good morning' like some people she knew. (though, as Hilda recalled, Calix actually hadn't said 'good morning', which she would have to wonder about later)
--------------
By the time James had arrived, Chayne had settled herself into a corner, having produced a lump of clay from some hidden pocket in her uniform to mold it in her fingers. So far it was looking like a horse, though when James arrived Chayne recalled his nickname and instantly squashed the horse's neck and began to turn the torso into something thinner so that she could start crafting a butterfly instead.
"Good morning, Butterfly!" Yasu greeted with a grin. "Ready for food?" It was at that moment she realized she hadn't introduced James to Hichigo. She'd have to do that on their way down the hall, though the way her pocket was starting to wiggle - was that a rat's tail sliding out the top? - it seemed Hichigo was going to introduce himself sooner rather than later.

Cael gave a wan smile. "Yeah, coffee. I need some, too. To the Great Hall, then." he said, walking across the common room and pushing the door open, glancing back to see if the others were following him.
--
James grinned. "I'm starved." he said. "There had better be bacon."

Hilda could not believe this. The coffee was just in the Great Hall? What was this school coming to, and why hadn't the school come to it when Hilda had been attending? And why hadn't the prefect said so earlier? She would've already been down there devouring all the black coffee in the castle. Nevertheless, she stalked after him, shifting up a sleeve to eye the clock tattooed on her arm. The clock was actually the eyeball of a tattoo dragon on her left arm that she had spent over an hour perfecting before she dared to place the charm on the clock eyeball so that it would work like an actual clock. (she even had to set it back an hour during daylight savings time)
According to her clock, she could've even slept in a couple extra minutes. Damn.
-------------
Yasu rolled her eyes at James' hope for bacon. "Sorry, but we're in a magical castle where food appears out of nowhere in front of you in a never-ending supply. I don't think they serve bacon here," she replied, sarcastically dashing his breakfast-y hopes and dreams. It was then that Yasu felt lighter. About a pound and a half lighter, to be exact. Odd... had some jealous girl cast a boob-shrinking jinx on her again? Technically it had only happened once, and it had been on accident and lasted all of one minute, but Yasu still remembered that very odd day.
Then she realized it was because her pocket was empty.
... Her pocket was empty.
Shit.
Glancing around frantically, Yasu realized this was because Hichigo had now managed to make his way onto James' shoe and was balancing there even as James walked. "Speaking of food, would you give a rat's ass if something was on your shoe?" Yasu asked with a grin.

Cael glanced behind him, to see Professor Roads pulling up the sleeve of her robes, looking at what appeared to be a very intricate tattoo. Must have been was Yasu was talking about, then. He turned back the way he had been facing, not giving it too much thought. In all honesty, he wasn't totally awake yet. -- James stuck his tongue out at Yasu. "You know what I meaaant." He totally didn't whine. Nope. Just..stretched out the word. Gave it emphasis. Yeah.
"Uh..It depends?" he asked, bewildered. "Why, is there something--" he glanced down at his shoe, and caught sight of the rat balancing there. He froze.
"Uh, hello." he said to it. He looked up at Yasu. "Why is there a rat on my foot?" he asked, more confused than anything.

Yasu watched with a very wide but close-lipped smile as James started to answer her and then glanced down. At least he greeted Hichigo. Yasu would've felt insulted if her pet had not received a proper greeting.
"Because I turned on the hot guy radar they embedded in his brain," Yasu said as if it were a question, smiling as the rat began to attempt to climb James' pant leg. "I mean, seriously, I've had him all of two months and I've already rubbed off on him."

James raised his eyebrows at her. "..Right." Hot guy radar? He was totally telling Cael this la--nah, maybe not. Cael would roll his eyes and tell him not to feed his ego. ..No, he was totally going to tell him. And smirk while he did it.
"So, does this guy have a name?" he asked Yasu, bending down and cautiously reaching out to pick the rat up.

They were getting nearer to the large entry stairs, which meant closer to the Great Hall. Yasu was obviously looking forward to it, but currently she was more focused on her adorable rat. "I dubbed him Hichigo after this evil but sexy demon kind of thing in this manga I read. Of course, that Hichigo has a six pack and horns, cause we know I can't resist horny guys. But that's okay Hichigo," Yasu said, watching as her rat allowed James to pick him. Then, continuing on in a baby voice she said, "I'm sure you're a stud amongst the rat ladies."

James just laughed, shaking his head. "Hi, Hichigo." he told the rat. "Is my shoe an exemplary form of transportation or something?"

Yasu rolled her eyes, smiling. "Should we really be asking Hichigo whether or not you make a nice ride? Wouldn't Cael be more appropriate for that sort of question?" Yasu pointed out.
Man, she was on a roll. Only, what, seven in the morning? And she was already saying suggestive things! Yes, this year was going to be an excellent school year.

That startled a laugh out of James. "Well, you can ask him, but I highly doubt he'll answer you." he said. He almost envied the ease with which Yasu could turn anything into a dirty joke.
