All the students had arrived and were seated at their proper tables. The sea of black, house-less robes enclosing bundles of nerves (the first years) had already been sorted as well. The headmaster knew now was the time to stand and speak. It had been several years since the passing of Headmistress McGonagall, and several more still since the defeat of Dumbledore. Harry Potter's children had already gone through their seven years of magical training at the blessed school of Hogwarts. In short, the condition of the school resembled that of an ocean on a windless, cloudless day. It was perfectly calm. So the headmaster spoke of the magic that not only was found in every witch and wizard, but the magic in discovery. He wove together a very simple piece of how he wanted people this year to discover new things about themselves and each other, because when the real world came there would be no time to search for the biggest pieces of themselves. Hilda found it to be rather ridiculous, and when Calix wiggled his eyebrows at her from down the table where she sat, she made it a point to ignore him and his silent and perverted suggestion. Chayne wasn't paying attention, instead observing everyone like she always did, though this time it was to see how everyone she had come to recognize so well had changed over the summer.
"Now before we begin our meal, I would like to introduce a new teacher. Professor Roads," the headmaster announced. When no one stood to claim the title, the headmaster turned to shoot a patient but meaningful glance at Hilda, who could not belief they expected her to stand up. She just wanted to eat her stupid food - she'd probably throw it up, anyway - and then go sleep. After all, for the rest of the year she'd be dealing with brats. But alas, the headmaster seemed adamant, so she stood, concealing her skinny body and her informal clothes beneath voluminous robes. "She will be the new Divinations teacher, as well as Ravenclaw's Head of House since our last beloved Divinations teacher resigned. Now, let the feast begin!" With that, food magically appeared on the table. Hilda fell into her chair with a bit of a grumble before stabbing rather violently at a slice of chicken meat and shoving it into her mouth.
Calix shook his head fondly at the woman before politely cutting up his own food. Chayne observed this, and instantly caught on to what relationship was there and how mutual it was. She had a knack for such things. Then she turned, scanning the table for muffins. Alas, there were none, so she idly began to cut up her chicken into tiny little pieces while searching for someone else to stare at.

James sat at the Gryffindor table, laughing and talking to his housemates. He hadn't seen them all summer, and it was nice to be back. As the headmaster stood up, the conversations amongst the students died off. For the most part, he gave him his attention, occasionally making a joke to the person next to him and snickering. When she introduced the new Divination teacher, Professor Roads, he looked over to the Ravenclaw table at Cael, who was frowning slightly but didn't notice his gaze. He'd have to try and catch him after the feast to see what his impression of his new house head was, then.
Cael sat quietly at the Ravenclaw table, making polite conversation with those around him. He wasn't exactly talkative in the first place, but the opening feast always made him feel a bit overwhelmed with the sheer amount of conversation taking place in the Great Hall. For the most part, he sat quietly and watched everyone else, trying to take it all in. He snuck a look at James across the Hall, who was laughing and joking with the other Gryffindors, and felt a burst of warmth in his chest. He was glad school was back in session--anything to get him away from his aunt's house in London.
As the headmaster stood and began his speech, Cael turned his eyes on him, attentive. He nodded slightly as he made his points, agreeing for the most part. As the new Divination professor was announced, Cael sat up a bit straighter on the bench, trying to gain a better view of his new Head of House as his housemates around him did the same. He frowned slightly as he noticed her adjustment of her robes and her look of displeasure. Whispered opinions flitted to and fro across the Ravenclaw table, and while Cael didn't join in, he did shoot a glance to Somalia, who was seated near him. 'What do you think of her?' he tried to convey. As for himself, by first impression she appeared stern. He knew how to handle stern.

Somalia and Lana sat next to each other at the Ravenclaw table. They were deep in friendly debate about a very not-serious matter. Across the table was Cael, they had all met a few years ago and new each other pretty well, they very often had classes together. When the headmaster stood up the girls stopped talking, Somalia stuck her tongue out at Lana as a last retort and Lana just rolled her eyes and turned around. Their new Head of House stood up when she was introduced. Lana was thinking that she looked like she would take no foolishness. Somalia would get in trouble with her, a lot. Professor Roads already seemed like the type of witch that could see right through anyone. Cael caught Somalia's eye and she gave him a look that said, "Eh, she's all right." Somalia rarely showed that she took things seriously, she was very laid back. She was thinking that Professor Roads would have bigger problems to deal with than a fifth year that was sometimes foolish and prankster-like. Food appeared on the table and Somalia jumped on it. Lana slapped her on the back of the neck, "Slow down! You'll choke!" Somalia took just enough time to glance up before continuing to gulp down food. Lana sighed and began her own meal.

Yasu was running late, having had to run off with a Gryffindor third year she had taken under her wing as of last year to help with some emergency. They ended up in the bathroom listening to Moaning Myrtle complain about Peeves. Yasu had been dealing with this since her first year, so she was used to it, but the third year girl looked very confused. Eventually they made it back, but it seemed the headmaster was already done talking and food was on the table. Yasu and the girl split, and the fifth year scanned the long table in a matter of seconds, spotting a good place to find her seat.
"Move it boys. I'm claiming a seat by Mister Butterfly," Yasu teased, gently poking one in the shoulder, who looked up at her with a good-natured grin before sliding over so she could sit beside James. "What did I miss, butterfly?"
Chayne's large, pale eyes snapped in the direction of her friend's voice down the table. Ah, she was next to James. Chayne recognized him from her observations. Quidditch player. Sixth year. Social butterfly. And that's also how Yasu came up with her nickname for him. Perhaps she should keep a closer eye on him. He could prove interesting since Yasu consistently found him worthy of conversation.

James looked up to see Yasu. He rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "Again with the nickname? Can't it be something more..dignified?" he asked with a grimace. It didn't really bother him, but he always had to give the younger girl a bit of grief.
"You didn't miss much. The usual speech I didn't pay much attention to. Oh, and we've got a new Divination professor." He pointed her out at the staff table. "Professor Roads. Ravenclaw's new Head, too. Hey, pass me the fries, would you?" he asked, pointing to the plate in question. "I'm starving."

When Somalia finished the food on her plate she finally looked up. Spotting Cael again she struck up conversation, "So how was your summer?" Without giving his time to answer she continued, "Lana and I took a canoe trip down the Thames. I fell into the water four times, no thanks to Lana." "Hey! You deserved it!" Lana interjected. Cael had long since learned to ignore their bickering, but he pretended to be interested anyway. Dessert appeared on the table. Somalia piled a breat amount of treats onto her plate and smiled in delight. Lana swiped some things from her friend's plate and took a bite of one of them, a small cake. "Hey!" Somalia yelled. Lana stuck her tongue out as payback for earlier. "So, how was your summer Cael?" she asked.

"I'll consider it when you act more dignified," Yasu replied with a laugh. Yasu's eyes brightened at the mention of a new teacher for Divinations. That sounded fun. Then again, Yasu hadn't seen Hilda just yet.
At the request for fries, Yasu considered sprinkling him for fun, but she was a food fanatic, and she would have such a rotten feeling for wasting food. So, she grabbed the bowl of fries which had two other hands reaching in to grab some of the goodness. "Oi, leave some for the rest of us. And remember to breathe! The stomach is not the only organ you possess," Yasu joked as they slowly retracted fistfuls of the greasy wonderfulness. She handed it to James. "Look what I won you."
Hilda was eying the table full of her house. A couple girls here. A quiet looking boy here... He looked quieter than many of the others, and he was older as well. She kept going, looking around to see who was laughing louder than necessary, who looked like a spoiled brat, a know-it-all, a trouble maker. Who wouldn't give her trouble and who would actually help her. Maybe she'd ask Calix later about all the students that she'd have.

Cael was quietly eating his dinner (salad and some fruit, he wasn't all that hungry), listening to the white noise around him. He glanced up when Somalia asked about his summer, the corners of his mouth twitching into an almost-smile as he watched her and Lana bicker. They were a bit childish, but he couldn't help but feel fondness toward them.
"Eh, not very interesting." he answered as the question was repeated. "I painted and tried to avoid my aunt, mostly."

"I'll have you know that I am oozing with dignity!" James joked, acting mock-offended and sticking his nose up. The act didn't last long, as Yasu handed over the bowl of fries. "Awesome, thanks." he said, grabbing a fistful of them and shoving quite a few into his mouth, waggling his eyebrows at her in a "I do what I want" sort of way.

Lana continued the conversation she had started, "You should spend Christmas break with us if you really want to avoid your aunt." Somalia nodded in agreement, her mouth was too full to talk. She hurriedly swallowed and said, "We could play wizard chess, and fly broomsticks, and tell scary stories and stuff!" Lana interrupted, "If you want to that is, it's just a proposal, not a sure thing just yet."

Yasu gave a comical frown at his lack of manners. But he said 'thanks', so it almost made up for the amount of fries he just shoved in his mouth. Sighing dramatically, she dug out her own mound of fries before putting the bowl back. "Boys just don't appreciate the potential awesomeness fries possess. All you can think of is if it tastes good or bad," Yasu critiqued, stacking her fries around her mashed potatoes (she was in a potato mood) to form a house. Then she snatched the ketchup and created a moat before picking up her sliced carrots and making them into the roof. "How was your summer, butterfly?" Yasu asked as she continued her work, taking breaks to cut up her ham and eat it.

Cael's eyes widened. "Oh, uh, really?" he stammered, thrown for a loop. He hadn't expected that--he got on with the two of them, certainly, but he hadn't thought that they were good enough friends to be inviting him anywhere. "I--thanks, that's really kind. I mean, I generally just stay here during the holidays, but.." He smiled softly. "I'll think about it, yeah?"
--
James grinned. "Weren't you ever told not to play with your food?" he teased Yasu. He grabbed some ham for himself, haphazardly cutting it into still rather large pieces, devouring it much the same way he did the fries. "'Sfine." he answered her, swallowing. "Dad took us around the country to places famous authors used to live. You know, family field trip. I got some video games--Muggle stuff. You?"

"You really don't carry a conversation well do you Somalia?" Lana said, "We'll get back to you on that, I mean, it's only the first day after all." Lana went back to eating her dessert and Somalia watched her, seeing as she had already devoured her plate full of goodies. Somalia started singing under her breath. "What are you singing?" Lana asked. "Roads." "Never heard of it." "You don't listen to much muggle music do you?" Somalia smirked.

Yasu pretended to take deep offense to the inadvertent insult to her food house. "I am creating art. And making my food more delicious," Yasu informed him as she took her fork and skillfully stabbed the north wall of her house, collecting carrots, fries, mashed potatoes, and ketchup all in one before biting. She listened attentively as she chewed and swallowed. "Sounds fun. And hey, I know the muggle stuff. I got it in my blood alongside video gaming and eating and... red blood cells. Full-blooded witches are missing out," Yasu reminded him cheerfully. "You know what though? I don't think I've ever played a single game with you. I challenge." Yasu pointed her fork at him to emphasize her point before stabbing a couple small pieces of ham into a stack and then sticking it into her mouth.

Cael smiled at the two of them. Maybe the back-to-school feast wasn't so bad.
--
James snorted. "My boyfriend's an artist, and he doesn't make anything like that." he joked. "So I don't know what kind of art /you're/ talking about." He scrunched his nose as Yasu took a bite of all of it at once, mumbling a faint [color-8B2500]"Ew."[/color] He brightened as she 'challenged' him. "Oh, you're on!" he said with a grin.
