Cael raised an eyebrow at her. "Isn't that a bit dishonest?" he asked dryly.
James watched the Seeker hopefuls as they began on their hunt for the Snitch as he moved out of the way of the Quidditch game currently in progress. His eyes narrowed a bit as he caught a glimpse of the strange girl he kept seeing everywhere--what on earth was she doing? Shaking his head slightly, he disregarded it.

Yasu sat back in her seat, ready to watch the show. "Actually, isn't it being more honest?" Yasu asked, having put a lot of thought into her friend. "Chayne's a shine-iac. Every day she ignores all the glimmer and shimmer stuff she's pretending like it doesn't fascinate her and catch her attention so that she doesn't get in trouble in class for not paying attention. It's just like if you pretend to suck at painting so the art teacher doesn't make you do an example for the class. But the moment there's an exam?" Yasu smiled and shrugged before pointing at Chayne, who was nearing the snitch. "Like hell you'd pretend to suck."
Then Chayne dove, swerving as the snitch became alert to her presence and started heading for a tower in hopes of turning sharply and sending Chayne careening into the tower itself.
It was going to take a left or a right the moment they got near the tower. Chayne could already here a suspicious exclamation from one of the seeker hopefuls. Left or right. Left or right.
The snitch was tilting towards the right, its right wing pointed slightly downward as it planned to swerve.
Chayne veered left. Luckily, so did it. Unluckily, there were two other seeker wannabes zooming towards that exact spot, and while Chayne pitched downwards, the snitch shot upwards to avoid capture. Had there been only one seeker, she could've simply leaned one way or the other and still grabbed her prize, but unfortunately, with two other people going for the snitch, she couldn't safely or easily dodge both (though an idea did flash through her mind of a very weird way she could've twisted her torso to catch the snitch anyway).
Eyes still wide and open for the desired shiny object, Chayne slowly shifted upwards near the ends of the other seekers' broomsticks. The snitch was racing right in front of the noses of the competition, and Chayne reached her hand up as if to slide between the two bodies and snatch it.
A thwacking sound. A beater had just hit a bludger in her direction after recognizing the threat.
Chayne angled her broomstick sharply upward, barely dodging the bludger and allowing it to collide into the end of the first broomstick, and then the second, sending the two seekers spinning as she made yet another drastic change in direction, nosediving and then flinging her arm out, ripping the snitch out of the air.
She stilled in midair, bringing the snitch close to her chest and cracking her fingers open so she could simply stare at the golden sheen of it.
So shiny.
Not taking her eyes away from her prize, Chayne angled the broom with her knees and headed slowly for the center. She wasn't really sure if James was there, but hey, he was captain, she was going for the center... It made sense that he'd eventually show up there.

James watched the race for the Snitch between the three hopefuls, fascinated. The strange girl that had been following around pulled an impressive stunt with her broomstick and ripped the Snitch out of the air, almost effortlessly. He bit his lip, holding back a grin as she made her way towards the center of the pitch. It was amazing, the way she'd gone for the Snitch, leaving no room for any doubt who he would choose as Gryffindor's Seeker. He blew his whistle, signaling the try-outs were at an end.

The whistle had blown, sharp and metallic in Chayne's ears, and despite the alluring golden sheen of the snitch in her hands she glanced upwards. The other two disappointed seekers cast saddened gazes over to the shimmering catch within her grasp before going slack on their brooms, losing their 'ready for battle' posture (in the mental words of Chayne, who was told many times she had such a posture herself on occasion). They drifted back over to James just to hear the official results, and Chayne angled her broom upward to follow them. She was constantly tempted to stare back at the snitch that rested cool and smooth in her palms, but as everyone was surrounding James to get the final results on each of the positions, she had to look up to make sure she didn't collide into anyone.
"Did Ravenclaw have their tryouts yet? Or did I miss them?" Yasu asked, wondering how the auditions went for her female Ravenclaw buddies. They hadn't made any sounds of complaint, but she had had no doubt that they'd make the team anyway. She just wondered how the two teams would compare.

"Okay, before I give the results, you were all pretty good. So if you didn't make the team this year, you can always try out again next year." James said as the prospective Gryffindors crowded around him.
"I don't think they have," Cael said contemplatively. "Or if they have, I never heard about it." He probably wouldn't have known if they had, he hadn't been paying attention since he wasn't interesting in trying out himself.

Yasu considered this information. She'd have to ask her Ravenclaw friends if she ever wanted to know. Dating a Quidditch captain clearly didn't mean knowing all the important things about Quidditch, which she should've known. She just thought that maybe Cael was paying attention sometimes when James talked about the flying sport.
"I know Hufflepuff's already had theirs, and I know that Slytherin's going last this year. Gryffindor nagged this tryout time slot before they could and none of the attractive Slytherins in my Transfiguration class would shut up about it," Yasu remarked. "I don't know why. The yearly donation of entirely new and updated broomsticks was made by one of the Pureblood wealthy snob families, so what the hell are they complaining about?" The new broomsticks had been a tradition ever since Draco Malfoy graduated from Hogwarts many years ago. Coincidence? Yasu thought not.
Chayne nodded patiently as she waited for James to announce the results. He needed to be quick about it, because she was still in a shiny mood, and she was about to go investigate the mysterious shiny thing in the grass... was that Yasu's necklace?

Cael chuckled at Yasu's rather sarcastic complaint. He hadn't heard about the Slytherins' "tradition", but it didn't really surprise him. It did sort of seem like a thing they'd do.
James began to list off those who'd made the team, beginning with the Chasers, then the Beaters, then the Keeper, and finally... "And Chayne Akaiyre as our new Seeker." James felt pretty good about the team he'd put together. Maybe they'd even win the Cup this year.

Having grown bored of James taking forever to announce the results and having also grown engrossed in the shiny thing that she was fairly positive was Yasu's necklace, Chayne found that she had slowly slid so that she hung from the bottom of her broom, legs crossed near the base and hands still gripping the front. Her hair fell down like a little white waterfall, pointing towards the object she was currently observing.
"... Chayne Akaiyre..."
At the sound of her name Chayne pulled up and hoisted herself into the proper flying position, hair askew and taking on the shape of a tree blown sideways by a windstorm as she blankly stared at James. Then it occurred to her. She had gotten the position. At first she had no visual response to offer anyone, including the dissatisfied and disappointed seekers who had come extremely close to catching it before her. Each one had found time to glance back towards her direction to see how she reacted, and those that had not been mad at her before were likely now frustrated at her lack of enthusiasm for getting the part.
But when they all looked away, she lazily turned towards Yasu and Cael and Tessa in the bleachers and offered a microscopic smile.
"I can't tell what that means. I think she's in, but until I get closer it could just as easily be that she lost and is a master of disguising it, as usual," Yasu observed, squinting at the white-headed girl.
"She's smiling. Don't worry about it," Tessa assured her fellow Gryffindor.
"How would you-" Yasu paused in her words to see that Tessa was sketching Chayne very rapidly from a distance, including a very small and subtle smile. "Artists. I don't know how you see any detail, but kudos." Then she raised her voice to yell at James. "Good choice, Butterfly!" she called as Chayne began to head towards them, diving down to snatch Yasu's necklace as she did so. [/blockquote]

James laughed as Yasu's voice drifted over from the direction of the stands. He looked up at where she was seated with Cael and Tessa, giving them a quick wave of acknowledgement. Then he turned back to the Gryffindors crowded around him.
"Thanks to everyone for trying out. If you made the team: great job. If you didn't--well, there's next year isn't there?" he tried to give some sort of consolation, smiling sympathetically. "Doesn't mean you aren't a good player. First practice starts in two weeks, I'll let you know when I book the pitch. You're free to go."
"She was good," Cael commented as the Gryffindors dispersed at James's dismissal. "That dive she made, and then the way she dodged the Bludger? Of course she made the team." He wasn't much good at Quidditch himself, at least by his estimation, and much rather preferred to be in the stands than on the pitch. But he'd learned quite a bit about the game by way of James, who loved it like nothing else. Even so, he'd been impressed by Chayne's obvious talent.

Chayne reached the group in the stands just as Yasu smiled and Cael and said with confidence, "Well, of course. She only truly cares about... four things? Might as well be good at them." Chayne made it and looked at Yasu with furrowed brows, almost looking sad. To most it wouldn't mean anything, but Yasu laughed. "I'm sorry, five. You're on my list too. Great job, Chayne," Yasu congratulated, throwing her arms around Chayne and basically pulling her into the bleachers and off of her broom. Luckily Chayne had quick reflexes and it didn't plummet to the grass below. "Okay, okay, I'm going to buy you a muffin. Mostly so I can buy myself a pack of licorice wands, but details. This is all for you. Now let's go say hi to Butterfly, yeah, Cael, Tessa?" And then she was off with Chayne in tow, though the girl had yet to change out of the Quidditch uniform.
Tessa shook her head. "I'm not done with my sketches. You guys go ahead." [/blockquote]

Cael glanced at Tessa's sketchbook and hummed approvingly. "Those are good." he commented, standing up to follow after Yasu and Chayne. He waved at her a bit, smiling. "See you later.".
James hung around on the pitch, watching the Gryffindors go back to the locker room as he waited for his friends. He was humming absent-mindedly under his breath, excited for the new year of Quidditch. He was feeling rather confident about the team he'd put together, and smiled lightly. His shirt, left draped over his broom, was quite forgotten.

Yasu raced out of the bleachers with Chayne in tow and Cael calmly following behind. "Butterfly! Butterfly!" When she finally reached the pitch and made her way over to him, she paused and sighed in appreciation. "The view is so much better close up... but anyway, I love you. You are wonderful. And we're going to kick every house's ass in the tournament. Sorry Cael, but you don't care how Ravenclaw does, right?"
Chayne furrowed her brow and put a hand on her friend's shoulder, arching one eyebrow when Yasu glanced over. "Oh, you're right! Somalia and Lanna! Shit! No! But... but abs and best friend and... oh no, this year is going to be awful," Yasu finally concluded with a frown, putting her hands on her fuller hips and shaking her head.
Chayne, knowing she only had one team to be concerned about, slipped a hand into her Quidditch uniform sleeve and pulled out a pumpkin muffin, which she then offered to Cael.

Cael followed behind Yasu and Chayne at a much slower pace, catching up to them just as Yasu asked whether he cared if Ravenclaw won. He shrugged in answer, assuming the question was somewhat rhetorical. Yasu continued on as he expected, mentioning Somalia and Lana, and he met James's eye over her shoulder, mouth twitching into a half-smile. "Surely it won't be that bad," he replied dryly.
James laughed fondly at Yasu's narration of her predicament. "I promise my abs and I won't be too offended if you root for other Houses this year," he assured her. Cael rolled his eyes.
He then blinked as Chayne pulled a muffin out of seemingly nowhere and offered it to him. "Um..thanks?" he said, taking it in an attempt to be polite. He tentatively took a small bite of it. There didn't seem to be anything weird about it, and it tasted like pumpkin. Not bad.

Chayne watched as Cael warily took the muffin and then proceeded to tentatively bite out of it. Ah, a trust problem. Perhaps Cael and her were not yet at that point? Maybe she should demonstrate the safety of her snacks. So, Chayne fished out a second muffin from her sleeve, pumpkin like the last one, and bit off roughly the entire top half in one bite, happily chewing away, not that you could tell. Only the light and energetic way that she chewed and the glimmer in her eyes revealed how pleased the silent girl was to have her pastry. She glanced over at Cael then and swallowed before taking another bite, eyes not leaving him.
Yasu put a hand to her chin and nodded. "If the abs say so then it must be true. I am glad to have your forgiveness in advance, should I feel the need to sway," she dramatically informed her friend. "But luckily I'll only have to be torn between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. I can clearly vote for one or the other as far as games with Slytherin and Hufflepuff go. Feel free to crush them with gusto... like avocado for guacamole!"

Cael wasn't sure if the staring and muffin-eating was an attempt at intimidation or a demonstration of goodwill, but either way he wasn't too bothered by it. He finished his muffin in a few more bites, and nodded at her in thanks.
James blinked at Yasu's food simile. "..Now I'm hungry," he said absentmindedly. His stomach rumbled in audible agreement.
