History: Jon Nash was on his way to becoming a professor when he met Ana Walker, a pretty young Muggle woman whose family had somewhat recently (the generation before her) came to America from India. They had a fling, and soon afterward Ana realized she was pregnant. Jon, who was falling in love with her, was overjoyed, (although more than a bit nervous about having a child at 23). Ana, however, was not. They had James, and it soon became clear that she was not suited to motherhood. Shortly after having James, Jon revealed to her that he was a wizard. This only made her more unhappy, and during one of her bar-prowling nights she had a one-night stand with another man, named Mortimer. She became pregnant again, and was less than pleased that she was going to have another child. Even though Jon was hurt that she had cheated on him (even though they weren't married), he stayed by her. When Mortimer told her that he was really Death, it was simply the last straw for her. As soon as Fane was born, she left both her children in the care of Jonathan and left New York, never to contact them again. Jonathan was heartbroken, and James has only vague recollections about him mother, although he remembers enough to know that he didn't really get along with her. Mortimer and Jonathan have joint custody, if you will, of Fane (they both are involved in raising her).
Jonathan tried to continue in New York, but much as he loved the city, it was simply too painful for him. He accepted a job offer from the University of Warwick in the UK as the English Literature professor. He sent a letter to Hogwarts, explaining to the headmaster that he would not be able to take the job for a few years, and asking if he would allow James and Fane to attend Hogwarts so that they would be at the same wizarding school for their entire "academic career", to which the headmaster agreed. When James was 13 and Fane was not yet 12, the family moved to England.
James took the move rather well, and was actually excited about it, because now he lived on the same continent as his best friend, Cael. Fane was not all that thrilled about the move, but she didn't pitch a huge fit--after all, she could Floo back to America in the summer if she wanted, and stay at their cousin's house.
James's friendship with Cael is interesting, because they didn't really become friends until second year, although they knew each other in a distant sort of way the year before that, because they had shared a compartment on the train. The summer between their second and third year, Cael ends up spending most of the summer at the Nash's house after a bit of accidental magic on his part causes him to Apparate there. Over the summer, the two become closer friends.
Personality: James is pretty much the definition of "happy-go-lucky". He is rarely grumpy, and is neither a morning person or a night owl, but is happy and energetic all day long (as long as he's had enough sleep). He doesn't stress over much, so if he's worrying about something then it must be a pretty big deal. He is the life of the party, and a bit of the class clown. While not as academically oriented as Cael, he is very smart. He prefers sports, and is on the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
He is also very protective of and loyal to his friends, and will do almost anything for them. If they call, he comes running.
He is also extremely protective of Fane, as he sees it as his job to make sure nothing bad happens to her. He often threatens to beat up her friends when it seems like they've hurt her.
Unlike most Gryffindors, James is not prejudiced towards Slytherin, partly because Fane is one and partly because he tries not to make such general judgement calls. He knows there are good and bad people in every House.
He also likes Muggle comics, and his favorite superhero is Nightwing. When he was younger, he wanted to be a cop just like Dick Grayson. However, now that he's older, he's decided that he wants to work for the Ministry of Magic as an Auror.
Since his father is an English professor, James has grown up reading and memorizing quotes from many pieces of famous literature and poetry. He is one of the few people who knows what Cael is quoting from half the time.
Description: James has very dark, inky black hair. It is short, but a bit longer in front so he can properly spike it up. He has brown eyes, and his skin is a kind of caramel color, since he is of Indian descent on his mother's side (actual India, not Native American). As he gets older, the more muscled he gets, especially his arms from playing Beater. If it weren't for the school uniform, he'd be wearing sporty, athletic clothes; mainly t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. He likes sporty, athletic-cut solid-color shirts or silk-screened t-shirts with funny things written on them. He also has several Quidditch shirts displaying his favorite teams, the Ballycastle Bats (they remind him of his comic stash), Caerphilly Catapults (the team is Welsh, and they are Cael's favorite), and the Fitchburg Finches of Massachusetts. Most of his jeans are rather scuffed up, due to the many Quidditch and Quodpot games he has played in them. His tennis shoes are similarly well-worn, and often have a layer of dirt on the bottom.
However, he also has some button-down shirts, nice pants, and other shoes that aren't scuffy. He usually saves these for special occasions, or when he has a date or something. Cael often teases James that he dresses like the posterchild for Nike, which is actually rather accurate.
James is on the tall side, but is slightly shorter than Cael once they both stop growing. He finds this odd, if not irritating, because for most of their years at Hogwarts Cael was the shorter one. James is eventually 6 feet and 1/2 inches tall.
Quidditch
Position: Beater, Captain
House: Gryffindor
Experience: Playing for Gryffindor since 3rd year
RP Example: James tightened his grip on the club, urging his broom forward. Stretching his left arm, he hit the Bludger towards a Chaser on the opposing team. He grinned as the club connected with a satisfying smack!, and continued to prowl the pitch, cheering when the Quaffle made it through one of the Slytherin goalposts. They were now ahead by twenty points.
