History: Cael was born in the city of Flint, Wales to Eirian Murano. His father was a fallen angel, whose name is unknown. Eirian knew what he was, and had her memory erased because of it. It permanently addled her brain, and so she was often confused and talking to people who weren't there when Cael was young. She alternated between knowing who Cael was, confusing him with their cat, or not remembering him at all.
Obviously, the times when she forgot him were very hard for Cael. She'd scream at him, and wouldn't let him be in the same room as her. Tristan was the only one who could calm her down and make her eat something. This only made Cael treasure her lucid moments even more.
He and his grandfather got along very well, though Tristan was often sad. He was tired, and seeing one of his daughters so unhealthy, while the other didn't speak to him, did not help. Tristan was proud of his grandson's curiosity, intelligence, and talent for art. He often gave him pointers, as he had been a good art student in his youth, as well.
Cael grew up with Eirian and Tristan on a horse ranch in Flint. He was always very curious as a young child, to the point that Eirian sent him to Muggle primary school. He attended to the fifth grade, when he got his Hogwarts letter. Never one to leave things unfinished, Cael takes online classes over the summer, therefore simultaneously getting a Muggle and a wizarding education. He complains about this only once in a while, because he genuinely likes to learn about things from both points of view.
In Muggle school he was often teased and made fun of, because he was interested in art more than anything else. The other kids couldn't understand his almost singular focus on it, and once one of the bigger kids even tore up his painting. Ever since, Cael has been wary of other people, and especially of letting others see his art.
His mother encouraged his interest, often taking him to the art museum and various exhibits in her more lucid moments. She also read lots of poetry to him, which Cael can quote from memory.
They had raised horses until his grandfather's death when he was eight. Then, they were forced to get rid of all their horses, except for Cael's favorite, a white-and-brown stallion named Adain (Welsh for 'wing"). He and his mother were very close, which was why her death in his second year devastated him so.
Eirian had never been very healthy after his birth, but after his grandfather's death she was visibly worsening. In fact, he fought about returning to Hogwarts after Christmas break of his second year, so worried was he about her. Not long after that, he got the news that she had died in her sleep.
Their house in Flint was sold, and he moved in with his aunt's family in London. His aunt had never gotten along with his mother (she was always jealous of Eirian, not to mention the disagreements over Cael's father, who she thought was some good-for-nothing), and she liked him even less. His uncle was more civil to him, but is scared of his aunt, so they don't talk much. His cousin, Lorna, adores him (Cael), and the two get on very well.
Personality: Cael is very easy to misunderstand. He comes off as very anti-social and rude, and to some degree he is. But really, he's just on the defensive around people all the time. A lot of the people in his life were not very nice to him, and as a result he tends to keep his distance emotionally from everyone. Once you get past that, however, he is actually a very good friend. He is very loyal, and while he has issues expressing "the softer emotions", as I think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle put it (at least in public), he is very kind and considerate to those he's let get to know him.
He has a strange sense of humor (he likes a good art joke), I suppose you could call it "dark", although "twisted" is going a bit far.
He loves to read about ancient history and master artists, and has a fascination with languages (he's fluent in Welsh and Latin in addition to English). He is very intelligent, and had he attended public school past the fifth grade, probably would have been put into a "gifted" class.
He likes learning new things, going new places, and generally experiencing the world--although he enjoys staying at home and painting just as much. He loves art, movies, good food (Italian), and curling up with a new book and a cup of hot tea. He also likes cats. He dislikes doing nothing, sports, meat (hence he is vegetarian) and small dogs. His favorite color is either blue or purple, although you wouldn't guess it, since he owns almost no article of clothing that is that color.
He's fine outdoors or indoors, although he tends to stay inside since he's generally painting. He is naturally messy, except for his bedroom, which is meticulously organized. He's contradictory that way.
Description: Cael has black, curly, unruly hair. His eyes are blue (as for a specific shade, darker than sky blue). He's a little under six foot, and is not exactly skinny-I think lanky or lean would fit better. He almost never wears jeans (except perhaps at James's urging), preferring khakis, and wears the same beat-up black sweater all the time.
The few times he isn't wearing the sweater, he's wearing a white dress shirt, sometimes a tie, sometimes a dressy vest...slightly formal and stylish, but not a whole lot. He doesn't really consider his appearance, since he's usually more concerned with his art and his schoolwork. His wardrobe is very monochromatic, and he generally avoids colors besides black, white, and grey.
His skin is pale and very easily sunburnt, so he avoids being outside for long stretches of time. He has some muscle, to work his wings, but he doesn’t work out or anything. Speaking of wings…he can make them come out (with an effort, which is generally painful), and they are white closer to his back, orange the farther you get to the tips. He has a "tattoo" (it’s really more of a birthmark) just above his left hip, which marks him as Nephilim. He has no scars or other tattoos. He has no freckles or moles or such. He has long fingers, almost abnormally so. He has an aversion to sneakers and open-toed shoes.
Other: He is friends with a Hogwarts graduate, Jenna Hanlin. She was in Ravenclaw with him, although she was two years older than him (she was a third year when he was a first year). They send letters back and forth, keeping each other updated (she creates the moving portraits and pictures of the Wizarding World). She is like the older sister he never had, and is also the only one who can call him 'Cal' and get away with it.
